What is the Writing Center?

The Gregory School’s Writing Center, which is directed by English faculty member Jessica Langan-Peck and staffed by highly trained student editors, is a collaborative environment where students across grade levels and disciplines come together to work on the process of writing.

The Center is modeled on collegiate writing centers and strives to provide encouraging, personalized feedback on the planning, outlining, drafting, revising, and polishing of written assignments in order to maximize student progress and self-confidence.

The Writing Center is for all students, Middle and Upper School, and for native and non-native English speakers. The Center sees students from virtually all disciplines and serves both inexperienced and experienced student writers, offering an audience for and response to their written work.

Why should a student visit the Writing Center?

A session with a student editor:

  • Gives students more opportunity for feedback and revision, resulting in a stronger final product.
  • Promotes student initiative & bolsters student confidence.
  • Emphasizes the importance of the writing process across disciplines, reinforcing techniques and concepts learned in the classroom.

What can a student bring to the Writing Center?

  • a college application essay in progress
  • a journal entry for English class
  • a Writing About Math (WAM) assignment
  • a history paper
  • a group project for World Civilization
  • French homework
  • a lab for chemistry
    (and so much more!)

Students in grades 8 – 12 can sign up for Writing Center appointments. Students in grades 5 – 7 visit the Center through class visits, Exploration Fridays, or special pop-up opportunities designed especially for them. The Writing Center is located in room 28 and, beginning Monday, September 9, will be open during Upper School tutorial Monday – Friday and during Friday Explorations E1 and E2. You can learn more or sign up for an appointment on the Writing Center website or through the link on the Powerschool student/family portal.
