TGS Family Association: Meeting families, making friends, and feeling connected

Why does The Gregory School Family Association president Ms. Ceci Alter believe that being active in the FA is a worthwhile opportunity for all families? “Getting involved is a great way to stay in touch with what your kids are experiencing in school, in addition to meeting new families, making new friends, and feeling connected to a very special community,” Ms. Alter said.

The Family Association welcomes every TGS family to participate in the capacity that works best with their schedules and interests, from volunteering for a single special event, to being a grade-level parent representative, to serving on a committee such as Fine Arts, Winter Formal or Athletics, to attending meetings, and more. Current volunteer opportunities are outlined on the Family Association web page

The first Family Association meeting of the year will be on Thursday, September 15 at 7:00 pm on Zoom. All parents/guardians are welcome and encouraged to attend.

The top three intentions of this year’s FA Executive Committee are to educate, engage and energize our current families around what is happening at school. The committee cites research showing that family engagement leads to increased student success, positive family and faculty/administration relationships, clarity in communication, and confidence in the school.

The Family Association’s first major initiative of the school year will be Homecoming 2022, to be held on Friday, October 21 from 4:00 to 8:00 pm. TGS Homecoming is like no other, with Middle School flag football, Upper School junior varsity and varsity volleyball, and Upper School soccer all hosting home contests, as well as carnival booths run by student clubs, food, games, and much more. Homecoming is truly a good time for the whole family, and it requires a large number of volunteers to make the evening successful. Please consider signing up for a time slot when the opportunity is announced in October. It’s a fun and rewarding way to get involved!

Ms. Alter, who is parent to Margo ‘22 and Simon in eighth grade, summarized why she has embraced The Gregory School Family Association: “It’s a chance for me to feel like I’m giving back, to have a sense of purpose here and to help my kid and other kids have a school environment that they are proud of.”
