Upper School Science Teacher

Job Overview

The Gregory School has a High School provision for students that includes:

  • Freshmen studying Biology
  • Sophomores studying General Chemistry
  • Students of all HS grades studying Physics. 

In addition, we currently offer the following lab sciences. 

  • AP Biology
  • AP Chemistry
  • AP1 Physics, AP2 Physics, APC Physics (Mechanics and Electricity & Magnetism)
  • Human Anatomy and Physiology
  • Marine Biology
  • Environmental Science
  • Organic Chemistry

The successful candidate will 

  • have a strong academic background in the preferred science
  • have a detailed knowledge of pedagogy as it applies to that science, including common misconceptions and how to address them (ideally based on best practices in cognitive science)
  • be confident in providing a rich experience of laboratory science, modeling, and other hands-on activities
  • have a strong track record of successful teaching at this level as defined by student progress, academic attainment, as well as supporting those for whom the work is a challenge, and stretching those who need additional challenge. 
  • utilize a range of appropriate assessment tools to monitor student progress (again, ideally based on best practice in cognitive science)

Being part of The Gregory School community includes creating Friday exploration courses and interim week activities that extend learning beyond the classroom curriculum.

Key Tasks and Responsibilities
  • Prepare lessons 
  • Make use of many, varied formative assessment tools, including retrieval practice, to judge student progress towards a secure knowledge, understanding, and ability to apply.
  • Make effective use of Google Classroom and PowerSchool for communication with students and parents in relation to assignments and grades.
  • Work as an effective team member as part of the High School Science Team (and in collaboration with the Middle School Science Team)
  • Communicate with parents appropriately as needed.
  • Utilize effective classroom management skills.
Qualifications

Candidates will have:

  • Bachelor’s degree in teaching, education, and/or science-related field
  • Prior experience teaching science in upper grades
  • Teacher certification preferred
  • Ability to work well with people, especially adolescents
  • Strong communication and organizational skills
